Impact Debates

” – The first principle is that you must not fool yourself -…” Richard Feynman (US physicist, Nobel Price Winner 1965)

We feel it’s important to be aware of all new technologies and social changes that emerge and surround us to an enormous extend. As part of our research, we think it’s a good idea to organise regular lectures and debates on topics that are vivid, contemporary and relevant to society, not only to present possibly ‘complex’, technological topics in an easy to understand way to an open and interested audience, we also try to stimulate interactive dialog between participants to get a good view on the relevance of those newly appearing innovations and tendencies and the sociological impact they might have.

The lectures and debates are presented in a 1h-format followed by an 1h animated debate to discuss and finalize the topic in public. Please subscribe for an event through the application form on our website.

  • Tue 4 oct 2016 (19h): IMPACT DEBATE: The Future of Virtual Reality  (moderated by Fabien Benetou, VR-specialist ICON-Brussels) in Ravenstein Gallery.
Will VR take over our real-life experiences, making us ’empty’ creatures with no resistance to physical encounters & obstructions? Will the value of true human interaction dissipate and be replaced by surficial and vollatile contacts with no true means for growth? Or is it all exagerated, where we just need to get accustomed to this technology that will only help us gain more and different experiences in life? It is unquestionable that VR is booming as we speak and will revolutionize how we experience things. Here at ICON, we think VR will notably reshape communication modalities in society. With this IMPACT DEBATE, we invite 3 expert speakers from the fields of science, art and corporate business, researching and working in the domain of VR, to go into an animated, public debate to get insight in the future development of VR and the social impact that it might induce. During the debate, all conclusions and tendencies will be assembled in a clean document, distributed and shared on social media and amongst all personal networks.EXPERT PANEL MEMBERS: the future of VR
